Measurements of N 2 O in the effluent gases from the burning of coal and fuel oil show that these are significant anthropogenic sources of atmospheric N 2 O. We estimate that the present global production of N 2 O from these sources is 1.6 Mtons N 2 O(N) per year and is increasing at a rate of ∼ 3.5% per year. Catalytic converters for the reduction of NO emissions also represent a major potential source of atmospheric N 2 O.
