The electrojet current deduced from radar measurements was found in the past to present large E‐W variations near the coast of Peru. New measurements in Africa indicate that the electrojet shows no anomalous variations with longitude in Central Africa while a large E‐W asymmetry is detected in East Africa near the Red Sea. Local structures of the magnetic field and particularly the non‐perpendicularity of the field lines to the dip equator can be at the origin of a permanent asymmetry. The origin of the enhancement of the asymmetry during magnetic disturbances is still unclear but can be associated partly to neutral wind gradients and possibly to induced effects related to large variations of the earth conductivity in East Africa.
