The observed shape of vertical spectra of ocean temperature fluctuations is shown to be consistent with an interpretation of deep ocean fine structure in which fluctuations with vertical wavenumbers less than about one cycle per meter are identified with internal wave motions while those with wavenumbers greater than a cycle per meter are identified with small scale turbulence.
