The mercury levels in rainfall in 12 U.S. states far exceed safe standards established by the Environmental Protection Agency, according to a 29 May report by the National Wildlife Federations non‐profit environmental group. All 12 states that were analyzed rated at least 84% above the EPAs human health standard for mercury in lakes, which is 3.5 nanograms per liter. The states also rated at least 99% above EPAs Great Lakes wildlife standard for mercury in lakes, which is 1.3 nanograms per liter.
