With the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) slated to begin in October 2003—the month following the conclusion of the current Ocean Drilling Program (ODP)—a number of groups are preparing for this next stage in scientific ocean drilling. The Joint Oceanographic Institutions (JOI), which has managed the Ocean Drilling Program for the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) since 1985, announced on 25 September that it has selected the two incumbent ODP science operators for its upcoming proposal to manage U.S. aspects of the IODP.
