A global environmental assessment by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), released 22 May recognizes improvements over the past several decades in river and air quality in many developed nations, and efforts to repair the stratospheric ozone layer. However, the report also notes a steady decline in the environment—including fresh water, coastal, and marine resources—especially in many developing nations. The assessment by the UNEP comes 30 years after the first international environmental conference in Stockholm and three months prior to the August 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg.
