Geoscientists throughout the world will be celebrating the third annual Earth Science Week, October 8–14, with field trips, demonstrations, lectures, films, school visits, open houses, and other activities intended to increase public understanding of the Earth sciences and their importance to society. Since the first Earth Science Week in 1998, the program has been supported by scientists throughout the United States and a dozen other countries. An estimated one million students have participated, and Earth Science Week materials have been used in more than 25,000 classrooms.
