With human and economic costs of natural disasters rising, a new international initiative launched on February 2 aims to reduce “preventable” costs of natural disasters in the developing world. “ProVention,” a consortium including the World Bank, governments, and institutions, hopes to promote safety by raising awareness of disaster‐related risks; to support public policies that reduce the risk of natural and technological disasters; to develop governments' ability to anticipate and respond to disasters; and to explore ways to provide low‐income groups with safety nets, such as insurance cover.
