Expedition gives fresh view of central Arctic geology

Important new information has been collected on the structure and evolution of the main geological features of the central Arctic Ocean. An expedition in July 1998 to the Alpha and Lomonosov Ridges produced the first multichannel seismic (MCS) profiles ever along Alpha. Biological probes, ice and aerosol sampling, and the collection of sediment cores also took place. One intriguing finding was that, while Lomonosov is biologically rich, Alpha is a benthic desert. Alpha proved to be one of the poorest benthic environments ever investigated in the Arctic Ocean.
