The latest meeting of governmental parties to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer took measures to further restrict chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochloro‐fluorocarbons (HCFCs) developed as a replacement for CFCs but also harmful to the stratospheric ozone layer, and other ozone‐depleting chemicals. At the meeting, held in Beijing, China in early December, the parties agreed to provide $440 million in new contributions to the Protocol's Multilateral Fund for the Implementation of the Montreal Protocol (MFMP), which encourages reducing the production and use of ozone‐depleting chemicals and supports adopting ozonefriendly technologies. The fund has spent more than $1 billion since 1991.
