A book published by AGU in 1998 has received the Association of American Publishers/Scholarly Publishing Division's award for best book in the physics and astronomy category. The book, New Perspectives on the Earth's Magnetotail, records the great achievements in magnetotail physics over the past decade. The book was judged on both its scientific merits and relevance to society. The award‐winning volume, which drew much from the new information obtained by the GEOTAIL mission, provides first‐hand information on the generation mechanisms for energetic particles. By revealing many of the basic properties of the plasma that fills the universe from the solar system to distant galaxies, it provides a basis for understanding cosmic processes.
