On December 9 in San Francisco, California, the AGU Council approved revised procedures for endorsing policy statements and letters originating from other scientific societies. Several times throughout a typical year, AGU is asked to back initiatives concerning public policy related to science. Initiatives usually fall within two categories: 1) Position statements that express a consensus opinion on a science issue, such as the role of the U.S. government in funding scientific research, and 2) letters to legislators or Executive branch officials urging action on a specific topic, such as a letter signed by AGU President John Knauss last summer along with the heads of 32 other organizations urging rapid confirmation of the new Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
