In 1981, P. Varotsos, K. Alexopoulos, andK. Nomicos (known as VAN) proposed that certain changes in geoelectric potential are useful in the prediction of earthquakes. Their claim has caused a continuing and very contentious debate. In an effort to shed more light on the issues involved and to broaden awareness of this interesting controversy, a contribution was solicited from each side. The manuscripts were exchanged back and forth until both sides were satisfied and made no further revisions.
