The Geomagnetism and Paleomagnetism (GP) Section presented the outstanding student paper award to Michael Winklhofer at the 1998 Spring AGU Meeting, in Boston, Mass., last May. Michael received his degree in geophysics at the University of Munich where he is currently working toward a Ph.D. His dissertation topic examines the possibilities of how the Earth's magnetic field can be detected by animals using biogenic ferromagnetic material.
