Kenneth O. Emery, former scientist emeritus at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and one of the best known and most respected leaders in marine geology, died at age 83 on April 12, 1998. K. O., as he preferred to be called, influenced most aspects of marine geology, both in the United States and in many foreign countries. K. O. was a generalist in the true sense of the word, and his dedication to science and his colleagues continued until just days before his death. He was a teacher, friend, and mentor to many scientists around the world.
