In his “Forum” item ( Eos , February 3, 1998), Ron Girdler commented on Alfred Wegener's “continental drift” theory and noted, “What we should be pondering is: Why did the scientific establishment reject such a large amount of evidence for so long?” A fitting answer whose message still holds was given by Sir Edward Bullard in 1975 in his autobiographical article in Annual Review of Earth and Planetary Sciences.
