This is a comment on the item “Locked‐in Stress in Viscoelastic Earth Materials” ( Eos , June 17, 1997, p. 248). In the box the author remarks “…u r is finite and uθ = uΦ = O…. There is a corresponding radial strain but no tangential strain…” The former is true, but the latter is false. The tangential strains are ϵθθ = ϵΦ= u r /r.
