José Pinto Peixoto, one of the most prominent Portuguese scientists of this century, died on December 6, 1996, in Lisbon, Portugal. He was professor of physics and director of the Geophysical Institute at the University of Lisbon, and president of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon, the main scientific academy in Portugal.
