Research in the Central Andes is currently providing new insights into the structure and tectonic evolution of this huge mountain range. “Deformation Processes in the Andes” (SFB 267), a Collaborative Research Center project, is employing 17 task groups and a variety of techniques and disciplines to investigate crustal processes near the convergent plate boundary of South America. We are interested in the interactions between the upper and lower plates and between the downgoing Nazca plate and the continental wedge; the state of recent deformation in the continental plate; the generation of magmas through time; and the shortening of the orogen. Field activities are concentrated on a segment extending between 20°S and 30°S, from the Pacific Ocean to the eastern Andean foreland, covering parts of northwest Argentina, southern Bolivia, and northern Chile. The geophysical surveys include active and passive seismology, potential field data, and magnetotellurics, combined with Global Positioning System (GPS) monitoring, geological field work, petrological and geochemical analyses, age dating, and remote sensing.
