The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and NASA have tentatively agreed to extend the Galileo mission to Jupiter and its satellites. The Galileo Europa Mission (GEM), set to begin in December 1997 and end in December 1999, would bring the spacecraft back into close proximity to the moons Europa and Io.
