This paper presents a two‐dimensional propagation model for microcellular local, personal, and mobile communication for the case when both antennas, receiver and transmitter, are located below rooftop level in an urban crossing‐street situation. The model of crossing broken waveguides with randomly distributed buildings (screens) and gaps between them (slits) is considered as a model of an urban area with a rectangular grid pattern of streets. The average field intensity attenuation at the street level and coverage effects are investigated taking into account multireflection from the building walls and multidiffraction from the building edges. The theoretical predictions were verified by path loss measurements obtained by the communication group of Tadiran Telecommunication. The comparison shows good agreement with experimentally found field intensity loss at the urban street level and redistribution of field energy at the intersections of streets in an urban area with rectangular grid plan streets.
