The format of the U.S. National Report to the IUGG for the period 1991–1994 is substantially different from the previous report. Guidelines to the editors specified an increase in the number of articles and for the articles to be shorter with a more narrow focus than in previous years. Accordingly, the Atmospheric Sciences Section increased from twelve papers in the last report (including the separate atmospheric chemistry section) to seventeen. Additionally, considering the guidelines to authors with respect to page limitations, the articles could not be as comprehensive as in prior years and each author had to make a judgment as to which aspects of their subfield to pursue. Any limitations in the scope of their reviews are noted in their introductions. In one respect, the authors' tasks were somewhat easier in that their topics were more limited. This new format, however, also increased the possibility of overlaps or gaps between papers.
