In this section of the U.S. National Report (USNR) to the IUGG for the period 1991–1994 are 44 papers on seismology, geodesy, tectonophysics, and planetology. With limitations on both the total number of pages in this section and on the number of pages per paper, it is impossible to review in detail all the work done in the U.S. on such a broad range of subjects. Instead, and in agreement with the overall philosophy of this Report, choices of topics were based on several criteria including scientific impact and societal relevance. If important science has gone unmentioned, then responsibility must lie with this editor and the authors of relevant papers, although in a few instances planned papers went uncompleted. Compared to previous similar collections, the papers in this section will therefore generally not provide a comprehensive review of the literature. On the plus side, however, the papers in this section may be more readable and accessible to the nonspecialist than were previous USNR papers.
