We demonstrate that laser‐light scattering (LLS) off glacial (pre‐Holocene) polar ice can be used to measure variations in dust concentration along sections of bubble‐free ice core. We have used this technique with considerable success on the GISP2 ice core that was retrieved from central Greenland down to bedrock. The technique is fast, non‐destructive and has a very high resolution (1 mm or less).
