An explicit analytic expression for the lateral‐wave contribution to the low‐altitude radar propagation factor is calculated. The effect of lateral electromagnetic surface waves on low‐altitude radar propagation over both sea water and fresh water is discussed. It is shown that significant modifications to radar propagation can be attributed to lateral waves.
