Nonlinear guided waves have important applications in ultrafast communication systems. These lead to new problems in electromagnetic theory which present interesting and challenging opprtunities for the development of the subject. This short review outlines the new problems which result from this development with reference to some selected but representative recent experimental work on nonlinear guided‐wave devices.
