NH 4 + to SO 4 −− ratio of aerosols and snows are investigated in Greenland. Data suggest that the atmospheric NH 4 + and SO 4 −− signals are well preserved in snow and that previous discrepancies sometimes observed between the composition of the air and that of the snow were probably due to NH 4 + artifacts. This study leads to the conclusion that NH 3 is not able to neutralize the acidity of the high latitude atmosphere in particular in the Southern Hemisphere.
