Time series of sea surface temperature (SST) in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean are analyzed using singular spectrum analysis as a means of testing the hypothesis that the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) system can be modelled as a deterministic low‐order nonlinear dynamical system. The results suggest, with some ambiguity owing to the relatively short and noisy SST record, that the main features of the ENSO system can be captured in a model of this type.
