When the magnetosonic Mach number is close to unity, the Venus bow shock appears to become very dynamic and is encountered far upstream of its expected location. This behavior suggests caution be used in interpreting distant bow shock locations as evidence for planetary magnetic fields when the Mach number of those distant crossings is unknown.
