We have performed a laboratory investigation of the infrared emissions arising from the interaction of a fast beam of O/O + with N 2 over the velocity range of 8 to 12 km/s. Emissions from the ground state vibration‐rotational bands of both NO and NO + are observed with apparent excitation cross sections exceeding 10 −17 cm 2 . The relationship of these observations to recent measurements of the infrared shuttle glow will be discussed.
