A simplified analysis is presented for the perturbation produced by a localized depression of the upper boundary of the Earth‐ionosphere waveguide. An earlier two‐dimensional model is generalized to deal with a depression which is limited in extent. Also, allowance is made for the depression to be laterally displaced from the great circle path connecting the transmitter and receiver.
