This special issue of Geophysical Research Letters presents a collection of papers dealing with stochasticity and nonlinear dynamics in space physics. Its 20 papers represent contributions from a large number of research groups and cover a wide range of topics in space plasma research. Despite this diversity and the use of many different methodologies, the papers have as a common theme the recognition that apparent randomness in space plasma systemssometimes has an underlying order which is describable by ordinary nonlinear coupled differential equations.
