The AGU Council's adoption last December of the American Meteorological Society's position statement, “Geoengineering the Climate System,” is timely. Within the past few months, geoengineering has surfaced as a hot‐button field of study that may hold potential solutions to mitigating global climate change. Congress currently is debating the subject of geoengineering as well as increasing the funding for geoengineering research. The first‐ever series of geoengineering hearings on Capitol Hill recently have been held by the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science and Technology.
