
AGU Fellows: The “U” is for Union

The sole criterion for election as an AGU Fellow is “outstanding contributions to the Earth and space sciences.” Each year, one new Fellow is elected for every 1000 members for this Union‐wide recognition. Another three to five Fellows are added under the policy that all medalists who have not previously been elected to fellowship are accorded that honor as well. (Most of these are Macelwane medalists, who must be less than 36 years of age when selected.) The age distribution of the Fellows recently elected ranges from 41 to 73, and the median age is 56. The median age of all Fellows is 65 and of the whole membership is 43. Currently, 1.9% of the membership are Fellows. Their distribution by primary section or focus group is shown in Table 1.
