David Montgomery, a professor in the Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington, Seattle, was selected as a MacArthur Fellow, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation announced on 23 September. A geomorphologist, Montgomery was cited for “making fundamental contributions to our understanding of the geophysical forces that determine landscape evolution and of how our use of soils and rivers has shaped civilizations past and present.”
