] In the work of Vallina et al. [2007] we showed that theseasonality of the solar radiation dose received in the uppermixed layer (or SRD) was highly positively correlated withdimethylsulfide (DMS) concentration seasonality over mostoftheglobalocean.Theunderlyingmechanismwassuggestedto be an increase in phytoplankton (direct) DMS productionthrough algal cleavage of dimethylsulfoniopropionate(DMSP) in response to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) drivencell stress [Sunda et al., 2002]. In this regard, Larsen [2008]gives an alternative explanation for the observed couplingbetween DMS and the SRD. Briefly, he suggests that thedrivingforcesbehindDMSproductionareinfactseasurfacetemperature (SST) and PAR, mainly through their effect onphytoplankton growth rate.
