Despite recent improvements in U.S. tsunami preparedness, greater efforts are needed in tsunami hazard assessment, detection, warning, and mitigation, according to a 5 June report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO). In the United States, tsunami detection and warning is handled by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), while a combination of federal, state, and local agencies manage hazard assessment and mitigation.
