AGU held separate briefings on 8 February for members and staff of the U.S. House of Representatives and of the Senate about AGU's position statement that calls for renewing investment in ocean research. The statement, which was adopted by the AGU Council in December 2005, supports the integrated research, infrastructure, and education findings of the 2004 U.S. Ocean Commission Report. AGU President John Orcutt, and Steve Bohlen, Joint Oceanographic Institutions president and chair of the panel that prepared the statement, noted ways in which ocean research and education contribute to U.S. innovation and competitiveness. They provided examples of recent discoveries, trends in ocean research, and their application to society
