The year 2004 likely will be the most expensive for the insurance industry worldwide, due to weather related natural disasters, according to figures released on 15 December by the United Nations Environment Program. Between January–October 2004, natural disasters have cost the insurance industry more than $35 billion, compared to $16 billion in all of 2003, according to the preliminary figures that were compiled by Munich Re, a global re‐insurance company.
