
Lack of a significant temperature influence on the incorporation of Cd into benthic foraminiferal tests

Benthic foraminiferal Cd/Ca is an important proxy for seawater paleonutrient concentrations and therefore deep ocean paleocirculation. Although previous work suggests that the incorporation of Cd into benthic foraminiferal calcite is insensitive to temperature, at least one species of planktonic foraminifer appears to be strongly influenced. The present study provides a closer look at the relationship between benthic Cd partition coefficients and temperature, using new and previously published data from the Bahama Banks. Neither calcitic taxa nor the aragonitic Hoeglundina elegans exhibits any consistent changes in partition coefficients over the range 4 to 18°C.
