Frankly, I was offended at the outset by two things about this book: the title and the blurb about the author. It is one thing for the Chicago Press to put out a book on the technical details of style. After all, someone has to layout more than anyone would ever possibly need to know on the exactitudes of how to quote, reference, and punctuate. But what on Earth could Chicago ever tell us about how to write, review, and illustrate a scientific paper, proposal, or technical report? And, even more, what do they know about giving a riveting talk? Would this be the Midwestern version of how to present science? Will rival accounts follow from California, Massachusetts, and England? Who should we take seriously about something at which we already take ourselves to be masterful?
