A new $8‐million research initiative that will focus on the relationship between oceans and human health—which the U.S. Congress mandated be established by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration—could help to fill in important research gaps in this area, if the program can overcome some internal challenges. At a workshop held 9 October to begin determining the scientific scope and structure of the initiative, some participants said that the challenges include questions about NOAAs commitment to supporting external research by the academic community Another concern voiced was that the study of marine‐based pharmaceuticals and bioactive agents should receive more focus within the program.
