The discipline of deep‐sea ecology has advanced considerably since its modern rebirth in the 1960s, and this latest installment of the “Ecosystems of the World” series is therefore both timely and important. Although it is ironic that the largest ecosystem on Earth remains one of the least known, significant knowledge on pattern and process has accumulated, and editor Paul Tyler has done a superb job of organizing 17 highly qualified contributing authors, including himself, to provide an impressive synthesis.
