Can you believe they actually pay us to do this? This is a quote from Craig Carlson, spoken as we stood aboard the RVIB Nathaniel Palmer looking out over the stark beauty of Antarctica and watching for the helicopters that would carry us into McMurdo. The quote captures one of Craig's great gifts—he has never lost his sense of awe and honor at being part of the scientific enterprise. It is just one of the reasons I am so pleased to present this citation for Craig, the first recipient of AGU's Ocean Sciences Early Career Award.
