The use of civilian and military high‐intensity sonar systems have suffered setbacks in two separate U.S. federal district court rulings in San Francisco. The suits affect the U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.S. Navy. On 28 October, Magistrate Judge James Larson issued a temporary restraining order to halt seismic research involving airguns, which had been conducted by scientists onboard the R/V Maurice Ewing, a vessel owned by the U.S. National Science Foundation.
