On 25 July 2001, around 8:30 a.m., red precipitation fell in parts of Changanasserry town in Kerala State, India. The colored rain covered an area of about 2 km 2 . Since water supply had been disrupted in the region, many people had left vessels outside to collect rainwater for use. When examined, samples of this water were found to contain micro‐organisms that resembled spores of algae and fungi. They grew well in an algal culture medium and were identified as belonging to the genus Trentepohlia .
