It's my very great privilege to act as citationist for the second of today's presentation: the award of what oceanography simply calls ‘the Bird’ or ‘the Albatross’ to Mike McCartney of Woods Hole. I'd like to do it in three parts: first a few words about the origins of the award itself, then a little from personal experience on the trials and tribulations of being awarded ‘the Bird,’ and finally a few words on the many sterling qualities that have made Mike the unsuspecting and next recipient.
