The first in a network of about 20 permanent broadband earthquake monitors to be placed off the coast of Monterey, California, was burrowed into the ocean floor on 9 April. The sensor, part of the Monterey Ocean Bottom Broadband project, could help scientists with the Berkeley Seismological Laboratory the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, and others to better understand seismic activity along the California coast and on the Pacific Plate.
