Carbonyl sulfide (COS) was measured in surface seawater during two Atlantic cruises. The daily mean concentration of COS is correlated to the daily means of global radiation, CH 3 SH concentration, hydrolysis lifetime of COS in seawater, and the logarithm of chlorophyll a concentration. An empirical model for the COS concentration has been developed on the basis of correlations between the COS concentration and these parameters. The model appears to be a promising tool for estimating COS concentrations in surface seawater from satellite observations.
