New computer promises to accelerate climate change research

The acquisition of a new IBM SP supercomputer and advanced technologies, announced on November 9 by a Boulder, Colorado‐based research organization, could accelerate research into global and regional climate change, short‐ and long‐range weather prediction, atmospheric chemistry, space weather, and other areas. The equipment, announced by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and its parent organization, the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), will provide atmospheric scientists with access to new computational, storage, and communications capabilities. The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) purchased the machine for use at NCAR to advance geoscience research.
